Lighter-Than-Air Flight

Aircraft that employ “lighter-than-air” principles are the simplest flying machines ever devised by people. Long before the Wright brothers took the first airplane flight, two French brothers — Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier — took to the air in a hot-air balloon.

In addition to hot-air balloons, two other types of aircraft are considered “lighter-than-air” flyers: gas balloons and blimps.
