Everyone
wants to be greener – from recycling to living off the grid. Helping students
understand recycling, sustainable energy, and other green topics has never been
more timely.
To help
teachers find classroom resources, the Pitsco Education
2009 Big Book catalog features
a greened
(green education) icon and a section on sustainable energy featuring all our
best solar, wind, maglev, and fuel cell projects as well as supplemental books
and DVDs.
These
activities were developed to foster excitement for STEM subjects and
sustainable energy. When students see a Ray Catcher zip through the school
parking lot or roast a hot dog in the Der Wiener Roaster, they get excited
about the activity. Excitement leads to interest. Interest leads to learning.
And learning about these technologies is a great way to
prepare students for a green career – a field with approximately 85,000 green
jobs opening every year, according to Gregory McNamee in
Careers in Renewable Energy. Whether
students want to develop, finance, install, or promote green technologies, this
field has a place for them.
Environmental
engineering is predicted to be a promising field, so Pitsco introduced two new guides:
Environmental Engineering and
Sustainable Energy Engineering. Written
by Celeste Baine – engineer, educator, and supporter of green living – the
guides lead middle and high school classes through activities about green
technologies, the environmental impact of products and buildings, and more.
“As this field continues to
grow, so will the opportunities for many different types of engineers,” Baine
said. “We all want to make a difference. Fortunately, engineering is
one of the best ways in which to achieve it because the work of engineers
impacts millions of people every day.”
